Audi RS3 8YStage 1 to Stage 4 tuning guide

The 8Y keeps the RS3's 2.5 five-cylinder but adds the RS Torque Splitter at the back. Every flash tune needs the engine computer unlocked first, and published Stage 1 figures range from about 450 to 560 hp on pump fuel. The five-cylinder is famous for big-turbo builds, and the limits are the gearbox software, heat and, on European cars, the particulate filter.

Power by stage

Stage 1 and 2 are the tuners' own published figures on pump fuel (91–93 US / 95–98 RON). Stage 3 figures are turbo-kit makers' claims, often on higher-octane fuel, and Stage 4 is a community build range. Real results depend on fuel, weather and the individual car.

Software only

+45 to +160 hp

Every flash tune for the 8Y needs the engine computer unlocked first: APR supplies an unlocked ECU, and Unitronic unlocks yours by send-in. Published figures on pump fuel range from APR's 446 hp on 91 octane to Unitronic's 561 hp on 93; tuners measure differently, and APR measured the stock car at 412 hp on its own dyno. APR says no gearbox tune is needed at its stages. Plug-in modules from ABT, MTM, RaceChip and JB4 leave the factory ECU untouched.

Typical cost: APR $1,200 plus a $1,000 unlock; Unitronic's unlock alone $560 (software through dealers); plug-in modules €479–€609 (RaceChip), $679 (JB4) and $1,499–$1,949 (MTM); HGP €5,800 and ABT Power S €6,090 including VAT.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Recommended with Stage 1

  • Engine computer unlock flash tunes APR (ECU swap)Unitronic (send-in)

Needed for every flash tune; plug-in modules don't need it.

  • Gearbox (TCU) tune or unlocked TCU optional Unitronic unlocked TCUHGP

APR says none is needed at its stages. Unitronic says its unlocked TCU reduces clutch slip, and HGP raises clutch pressure in every stage.

Before you buyThe 2025 facelift uses a newer engine computer (MG1CS164), so check that the tune supports your car. In Israel only 95 and 98 octane are sold, so ignore the race-fuel and E85 figures.
2

Intake, intercooler and downpipe

+66 to +164 hp

Stage 2 adds breathing parts and a file written for them. APR's Stage 2 needs only an intake and an intercooler, while Unitronic's 565 hp Stage 2 also adds a downpipe with mid-pipes. On European cars the particulate filter matters: HGP's TÜV-approved route keeps it with a catalysed downpipe.

Typical cost: APR $1,300 plus the unlock; HGP €8,500 plus €1,000 fitting; ABT Power R €9,151 including VAT.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Parts list

  • Intake required Eventuri intake (RS3 8Y)APRIE

Eventuri claims 15–20 hp on a car with the stock turbo.

  • Intercooler upgrade required Wagner TuningIEAPR

Every Stage 2 package here includes one; it keeps power up on hot days and repeated pulls.

  • Catalysed downpipe Unitronic Stage 2 UnitronicHGPMilltek Sport

Needed for Unitronic's figures, not for APR's. On European cars choose one that keeps the particulate filter.

Before you buyDownpipes that delete the particulate filter are sold for off-road use only and fail inspection, and some also need extra software. Keep the original parts.
3

Upgraded turbo

585–613 hp

Stage 3 replaces the factory turbo. HGP's TÜV-approved kits claim 585 hp with its turbo and a catalysed downpipe, and 613 hp with an added Wagner intercooler. TTE says its TTE600 has made over 600 PS on 102-octane fuel and 590 on 99 octane. From here a gearbox tune is part of the package.

Typical cost: HGP turbo kits €13,500–€15,500 plus €1,500 fitting; the TTE600 turbo alone €1,791 before VAT.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Parts list

  • Upgraded turbo required TTE600 turboHGP

Sold with, or tuned for, a file written for that turbo.

  • Gearbox (TCU) tune required UnitronicHGP

More torque needs higher clutch pressure and new gearbox limits.

  • Intercooler upgrade required Wagner Tuning

TTE notes that the Wagner EVO3 intercooler is only recommended up to about 600 hp.

  • Port injection for ethanol E85 builds Unitronic

Unitronic's E85 files need its port-injection injector kit.

Before you buyBudget for the full package: turbo, gearbox software, intercooler, fuel and labour. The biggest figures need 102-octane fuel or ethanol, which aren't sold at Israeli filling stations.
4

Built engine

650–800+ hp

The five-cylinder is one of the best-known big-power engines. HGP's top TÜV-approved stage claims 650 hp with steel rods and new pistons, and TTE says its bigger TTE855 turbo has made 750 PS on 102 octane and over 800 PS on E85 with the right hardware. These are community build ranges, not everyday builds.

Parts list

  • Steel rods and new pistons required HGP

HGP's 650 hp stage uses steel rods and machined pistons at 9.2:1 compression.

  • Big turbo and fuel system required TTE855 turboUnitronic

With port injection or flex-fuel for ethanol.

  • Gearbox, rear drive and cooling required UnitronicWagner Tuning

The dual-clutch gearbox and the Torque Splitter rear drive both take much more load at this power.

Before you buyStage 4 is an engine build, not a bolt-on. Choose one shop to build, tune and stand behind the whole package.

Questions to ask the shop

  1. Which engine computer does my car have (MG1CS163 or the facelift's CS164), how will you unlock it, and can I go back to stock?
  2. Is a gearbox (TCU) tune or unlocked TCU included, and what torque limit and clutch pressure does it set?
  3. On a European car, does the tune keep the particulate filter, and is the downpipe catalysed and road legal?
  4. Which fuel is the quoted figure for (95 or 98 RON, race fuel or E85), and is it measured at the crank or the wheels?
  5. How does the tune treat the Torque Splitter and drift mode at higher torque?
  6. What warranty or approval paperwork comes with it?
