How much does tuning cost? Stage 1, 2 and 3 prices on 12 carsBuild Ladder blog

Stage 1 on most cars costs about the same as a set of good tyres. Stage 3 can cost more than the car is worth. Here are the real prices from the tuners' and shops' own pages, and the costs that don't show up in the advert.

The short answer

  • Stage 1 is software only. On most cars it costs $370–$700, the price of a set of good tyres. Some newer cars need an unlock first, which can double the price.
  • Stage 2 adds parts that let the engine breathe: usually a downpipe, an intercooler and an intake. Expect $1,000–$3,000 in parts on a hot hatch, before fitting.
  • Stage 3 means a bigger turbo. The turbo alone is $1,500–$4,000 on most four-cylinder cars, and the fuel system, clutch and tuning around it often cost as much again.

What makes the price go up

  • Locked engine computers. Many cars from about 2020 need the computer unlocked before any tune can be written. On the RS3 8Y APR charges $1,000 for its unlock on top of the $1,200 tune; on newer BMW G20 cars a bench unlock costs $215 by mail or $850–$1,500 for a FEMTO unlock.
  • Gearbox software. Automatic and DSG gearboxes often need their own tune to hold the extra torque and shift faster. It usually adds $400–$650.
  • Big names and warranties. Plug-in modules and tunes from MTM, ABT, AC Schnitzer or G-Power cost several times more than a flash tune, and on some cars APR Plus adds a limited powertrain warranty for about $1,000 more.
  • Emissions-legal parts. A downpipe with an ECE-approved catalyst can cost two or three times as much as a race one. See our downpipe guide.

The costs that aren't in the advert

  • Fitting. Software you can often flash at home with a cable. A downpipe or intercooler takes a shop a few hours; a turbo swap takes a day or more.
  • A healthy car. Fresh spark plugs, coils and a good battery before the flash. Tuning a car with worn parts only finds the weak part faster.
  • Maintenance. Shorter oil and spark plug intervals, and on many cars only 98 octane.
  • The clutch. From Stage 2 on, a stock clutch often starts to slip. An uprated one is $250–$1,600 plus fitting.
  • Insurance. Tell your insurer. A hidden modification can void the policy when you need it most; see is a tuned car legal and insured?

How to spend less

Most of the gain for the money is in Stage 1: on many cars it adds 20–40% for a few hundred dollars. Buy parts in the order your tuner's Stage 2 file needs them, not all at once, and log the car after each step. Then open the guide for your car: it lists every tune, the parts each stage needs and the price of each.
