The difference in one sentence
Stage 1 is software only: the tune raises boost and changes timing and fuelling on a stock car. Stage 2 is a stronger file written for parts that let the engine breathe and stay cool, usually a downpipe, an intercooler and an intake. Without those parts a Stage 2 file runs the car outside what it was written for.
The numbers
The tuners' own published figures. Each range runs from the lowest fuel or tuner to the highest, so the percentages compare the bottom of each range: Stage 1 against stock, then Stage 2 against Stage 1.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| VW Golf GTI Mk7 / 7.5 | 210 hp | 290–337 hp +38% | 334–351 hp +15% | downpipe, intake, intercooler |
| VW Golf R Mk7 / 7.5 | 292 hp | 355–413 hp +22% | 397–461 hp +12% | intake, intercooler, Stage 2 file |
| Audi S3 8V | 292 hp | 357–381 hp +22% | 372–397 hp +4% | intake, intercooler |
| Audi RS3 8V | 394 hp | 459–542 hp +16% | 493–574 hp +7% | intake, turbo inlet, intercooler |
| BMW 135i / 335i N54 | 300 hp | 360–400 hp +20% | 380–440 hp +6% | downpipes, intercooler |

What the table shows
- Stage 1 gives most of the gain. On these cars Stage 1 adds 13–38% for the price of software. Stage 2 adds another 4–15% on top.
- Peak power undersells Stage 2. The real gain is consistency: an intercooler keeps the intake air cool on the third pull or on a hot day, and a downpipe helps the turbo spool sooner. On a dyno sheet that's a fuller curve rather than a much higher peak.
- Some cars gain more than others. Cars with a small factory downpipe or intercooler (such as the GTI Mk7) gain more from Stage 2 than cars that were already well equipped from the factory.
When Stage 2 is worth it
- You live somewhere hot or drive on track. Heat-soak is where Stage 1 cars lose the most power, and the intercooler is the fix. In an Israeli summer this matters more than the peak figure.
- Your tuner's Stage 2 file is much stronger than Stage 1. Check the figure for your exact car and fuel in its guide.
- You accept the paperwork. A downpipe changes the emissions system; read our downpipe guide before you buy one.
If you drive mostly on the road in mild weather, a good Stage 1 with a gearbox tune is often the better deal. See what each stage costs.
