Power by stage
Peak engine horsepower claimed by the tuners, on the best fuel each file supports. Real results depend on fuel, weather and the individual car.

Software only
+87 to +134 hpA new file for the Simos 19 engine computer, flashed through the OBD port. APR's Stage 1 needs no hardware at all and is offered for fuels from 87 octane up to E85; Unitronic's figures assume its gearbox tune, intake and intercooler are also fitted.
Typical cost: APR software $660; APR gearbox (TCU) tune $650 more. Unitronic sells through dealers only.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.
Stage 1 tunes compared
| Brand | Fuel | Claimed power | Claimed torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| APR Stage 1 | 87 US up to E85 | 328–375 hp | 391–427 lb-ft | No hardware needed; torque-limited files for manual cars |
| Unitronic Stage 1 | 91 US / 95 RON | 336 hp | 352 lb-ft | With Unitronic's gearbox tune, intake and intercooler |
| Unitronic Stage 1+ | 93 US / 98 RON | 361 hp | 377 lb-ft | Same as Stage 1 on higher-octane fuel |

Recommended with Stage 1
- Gearbox (TCU) tune recommended
APRUnitronic
APR's full-output files work without it, but a DSG tune gives faster, harder shifts. Not every DQ381 gearbox software version can be tuned through the OBD port, so check yours first.
- Intake system recommended
APR intake system (EA888.4)
Part of Unitronic's Stage 1 hardware list, and the first step towards APR's Stage 2.
- Intercooler upgrade recommended
Wagner TuningAPRUnitronicCTS TurboMishimotoForge Motorsport
Keeps charge temperatures down so the tune does not pull power on hot days.
Breathing parts plus a Stage 2 file
+104 to +151 hpBrands define Stage 2 differently on this car. For APR, adding its intake and intercooler automatically moves the tune to Stage 2 levels, with 345–392 hp and 391–428 lb-ft depending on fuel. For Unitronic, Stage 2 means adding a downpipe.
Typical cost: the same APR file ($660); APR intake $400.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.
Stage 2 tunes compared
| Brand | Fuel | Claimed power | Claimed torque | Required hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| APR Stage 2 | 87 US up to E85 | 345–392 hp | 391–428 lb-ft | APR intake and intercooler |
| Unitronic Stage 2 | 93 US / 98 RON | See brand page | Downpipe, plus intercooler and intake | |

Bigger turbo
+169 to +237 hpTwo main routes. APR's Stage 3 OEM file uses the larger factory turbo from the Golf R Mk8 and S3 8Y, and claims 410–478 hp and 400–443 lb-ft. Unitronic's Stage 3 uses the Garrett PowerMax turbo and claims 470 hp and 425 lb-ft on 93 octane.
Typical cost: the same APR file ($660); the turbo is extra.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.
Stage 3 tunes compared

Forged engine, big turbo
500+ hpBeyond Stage 3 you are rebuilding the engine: forged pistons and rods, a big turbo, a full fuel system for E85 and a custom tune. On a front-wheel-drive GTI, grip becomes the real limit long before the engine does. These are community build ranges, not product claims.

Questions to ask the shop
- Is this file made for the Gen 4 engine and Simos 19 computer in my car?
- Which exact file will you flash, and for which fuel octane?
- Can my DSG software version be tuned through the OBD port?
- Is the downpipe you are fitting catalysed and road legal where I live?
- Will you log the car after tuning and show me the results?
- Can the tune be returned to stock, and what does that cost?
