Honda Civic Type R FK8Stage 1 to Stage 4 tuning guide

The FK8 was the first turbocharged Civic Type R and the first sold in the US. It has the K20C1, a 2.0 VTEC Turbo four with direct injection only, a 6-speed manual and front-wheel drive, rated at 306 hp and 292 lb-ft in the US (Carscoops) and 228 kW and 400 Nm in Australia (WhichCar). The FL5 that replaced it uses the same engine, so turbos, fuel systems and clutches are largely shared.

Power by stage

Stock is Honda's US figure. Stage 1 is engine power from Hondata's tunes; Stage 2 to 4 are at the wheels (whp), as US tuners quote them, so they read lower than engine power. US 93 octane equals 98 RON, the best fuel sold in Israel.

Stage 1: Software only

340–365 hp

A tune on a standard car adds 33 hp and 39 lb-ft on 91 octane and 47 hp and 72 lb-ft on 93, Hondata says, and 58 hp on a 25% ethanol blend (Hondata). Honda locked the FK8's engine computer, so it has to be jailbroken first: Hondata does 2017–2019 cars with its instant jailbreak, and 2020–2021 cars need its jailbreak module (Hybrid Racing). COBB's Accessport includes an unlock box for 2020–2021 cars (COBB).

Typical cost: Hondata FlashPro $695 at launch, plus $250 for the computer jailbreak.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Before you buyHondata sells its tunes for off-road use and launched them for North American owners (WhichCar); ask your tuner what applies to a European or imported car. Ethanol isn't sold at Israeli filling stations, so read the 93-octane row.

Stage 2: Intercooler, intake, downpipe and fuel system

360–400 whp

The stock intercooler heat-soaks quickly, so it's the first part. On Hondata's dyno for DSport, Full-Race's intercooler kept intake air around 72°F where the stock one rose from 77°F to 117°F, and gained 8.64 whp (Full-Race). The engine has direct injection only, so more power needs more fuel: Full-Race says a car with an intercooler, downpipe, front pipe and cat-back went from 360 to 400 whp on the stock turbo with Hondata's fuel system (Full-Race).

Before you buyMost downpipes are race parts and need approval at Israeli inspection. Without ethanol, which Israeli filling stations don't sell, expect less than the E45 figures here.

Stage 3: Upgraded turbo

450–550 whp

Stage 3 replaces the turbo with a bigger one that bolts into place. 27WON's Kuro is sold for up to 500 whp on the stock fuel system (27WON), Full-Race's kit is quoted at roughly 400 hp on 91 octane and 500+ on race fuel or E85 (Full-Race), and PRL calls its P700 600+ horsepower capable with a custom calibration (PRL). PRL's P600 test car, with its bolt-ons, Hondata's fuel system and a built engine, ran a 10.91-second quarter mile (PRL).

Typical cost: turbos $2,200–$4,800 (27WON, PRL, Full-Race); Exedy Stage 2 clutch £638.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Parts list

Before you buyBudget for the full package: turbo, fuel system, clutch, custom tune and labour. A changed turbo isn't road-legal in Israel without approval, and the bigger figures need race fuel or E85.

Stage 4: Big turbo and built engine

600–650+ whp

Past the drop-in turbos, builds move to a turbo kit with its own manifold and a built engine. One FK8 for sale with a Rampage G30-660 kit, a built engine with a sleeved block and a full fuel system is listed at 485 whp on 93 octane and well over 600 whp on ethanol (Built for Backroads). 1to1 Tuning sells a built K20C1 rated for 650 hp and up (1to1 Tuning).

Before you buyStage 4 is an engine build, not a bolt-on: choose one shop to build, tune and stand behind the whole package. Ethanol isn't sold at Israeli filling stations, so the 93-octane figure is the one to plan around.

Questions to ask the shop

  1. Is my car a 2017–2019 or a 2020–2021 FK8, and how do you unlock its computer?
  2. Is the file written for 98 octane, and what does it make on 95?
  3. Do you log intake air temperature, and when do you require a bigger intercooler?
  4. At what power do you require the fuel system upgrade?
  5. At what torque do you insist on an uprated clutch?
  6. Does the setup keep a catalyst, so the car passes inspection?
