Audi RS5 B9Stage 1 to Stage 4 tuning guide

The B9 RS5 has the EA839 2.9 TFSI, a V6 with two turbos inside the V, an 8-speed ZF automatic and quattro all-wheel drive. Audi quotes 450 PS and 600 Nm, unchanged by the 2019 facelift (Audi). It belongs to the same EA839 family as the S4's 3.0 TFSI, but with two turbos instead of one, and the RS4 Avant B9 has the same engine and takes the same tunes.

Power by stage

Stock is Audi's figure. Stage 1 to 4 are tuners' own claims, mostly on US 93 octane, which equals 98 RON, the best fuel sold in Israel. The top of Stage 2 and all of Stage 4 need ethanol blends.

Stage 1: Software only

500–525 hp

A tune on a standard car claims about 500–525 hp on pump fuel. 034Motorsport claims 514 hp and 537 lb-ft on 93 octane, the same as 98 RON (034Motorsport), IE claims 502 hp on 91 octane and 522 hp on its higher pump-fuel file (IE), and APR lists 488–550 hp depending on fuel, ethanol included (APR). Like the S4, the car has a Bosch MG1 computer that is unlocked first, then flashed through the OBD port.

Typical cost: APR Stage 1 $899.95, or $1,799.95 as APR Plus with a limited powertrain warranty.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Flashed through the OBD port once the computer is unlocked.

  • Gearbox (TCU) tune recommended 034MotorsportIEUnitronic

034 and IE include their Stage 1 gearbox tunes; Unitronic's is free for its engine-tune customers on 2018–2021 cars.

Before you buyEthanol isn't sold at Israeli filling stations, so read the 93-octane rows. The RS4 Avant B9 has the same engine and the tuners list both cars, but have the tuner check your car's computer version first.
2

Stage 2: Downpipes, intercooler and fuel pump

525–605 hp

On pump fuel, Stage 2 adds little to this engine. IE says the 2.9 has two efficient factory downpipes that don't restrict the stock turbos, so its Stage 2 file, which needs aftermarket downpipes, claims the same figures as Stage 1 (IE). The real step is fuel: with an upgraded high-pressure fuel pump and ethanol, 034's Stage 2+ claims 566 hp and 610 lb-ft (034Motorsport), and IE's Stage 1 Plus 604 hp and 660 lb-ft.

Typical cost: APR high-pressure fuel pump (2.9T and 3.0T) $1,499.95.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

Parts list

  • High-pressure fuel pump required APR HPFP (2.9T and 3.0T)034MotorsportIE

Needed for the ethanol files; APR's pump is $1,499.95, and 034's upgrade uses a 37% larger piston.

  • Intercooler recommended Wagner TuningIE

034's Stage 2 package includes Wagner Tuning's competition intercooler.

  • Downpipes or racing catalysts optional 034MotorsportIEUnitronic

034's Stage 2 package uses its stainless-steel racing catalyst set.

  • Intake optional APR intake system034MotorsportUnitronicEventuri

APR measured 19 whp more from its intake on a Stage 1 (93 octane) RS5.

Before you buyRacing catalysts and downpipes are motorsport parts and need approval at Israeli inspection. Without ethanol, which Israeli filling stations don't sell, Stage 2 makes about the same as Stage 1.
3

Stage 3: Hybrid turbos in the factory positions

590–680 hp

Stage 3 replaces both turbos with hybrids that bolt into the factory positions. 034's Stage 3 with The Turbo Engineers' TTE720 turbos claims 536 hp on 91 octane, 590 hp on 93 and 680 hp on E85 (034Motorsport). Its Stage 3 package adds 4-bar MAP sensors, its fuel pump upgrade, racing catalysts and the Wagner intercooler (the package), and 034 requires at least its Stage 1 gearbox tune.

  • MAP sensors required 034Motorsport

4-bar sensors are part of 034's Stage 3 package.

  • High-pressure fuel pump required APR034MotorsportIE

Part of 034's Stage 3 package.

  • Gearbox (TCU) tune required 034MotorsportIE

034 says its Stage 1 gearbox tune is required, and its Stage 3 tune optimises the shift points.

Before you buyChanged turbos aren't road-legal in Israel without approval. On Israeli 98, read the 93-octane figure: 590 hp.
4

Stage 4: Bigger hybrids and ethanol

710–740 hp

The top builds run ethanol. 034's TTE720 car claims 713 hp on E60–E70 (034Motorsport), and its development RS5 was the first RS5 to run a 9-second quarter mile, on TTE720s and an ethanol file (Audi Club North America). IE's Pure800 hybrid turbos with its Stage 3 engine and gearbox tunes claim up to 741 hp and 688 lb-ft, from 444 hp stock; the pair costs $3,995 and needs IE's turbo inlet pipes and fuel pump upgrade (IE).

Typical cost: IE Pure800 hybrid turbos $3,995 for the pair.List prices, Sept 2026, before shipping, import tax and fitting.

IE Stage 3 with Pure800—up to 741 hp688 lb-ft$3,995 for both turbos

Parts list

  • Hybrid turbos required IE Pure800 twin turbosTTE

IE sells the Pure800s as complete turbos, so no cores are needed.

  • Ethanol content sensor recommended APRIE

APR recommends one to make sure the ethanol content is right.

  • Gearbox upgrades optional 034Motorsport

034's record car also ran its billet transmission insert.

Before you buyEthanol blends aren't sold at Israeli filling stations, so these figures aren't reachable on pump fuel here; on 98, plan around Stage 3's 590 hp. Buy the engine and gearbox tunes from one tuner.

Questions to ask the shop

  1. Which computer version does my car have, and do you have a file for it?
  2. Can you unlock the Bosch MG1 computer through the OBD port, or does it have to be removed and sent away?
  3. Is the file written for 98 octane, and what does it make on 95?
  4. Is a gearbox (TCU) tune included, and which stage do I need?
  5. Does the tune keep the catalysts working, so the car passes inspection?
  6. What does it do to my warranty, and do you offer your own powertrain cover?
