Best first mods for a Golf GTI Mk7, in the right orderBuild Ladder blog

The Mk7 GTI is one of the easiest cars to tune well, and one of the easiest to waste money on. Here is the order that gives the most for each dollar, with the tuners' own figures and prices.

1. Start with a healthy car and colder plugs

Before any tune, make sure the car runs well on stock software: fresh spark plugs and coils, no warning lights and no boost leaks. APR recommends spark plugs one step colder with its Stage 1 to reduce misfires at higher boost. It's the cheapest part on this list and saves the most head-scratching later.

2. Stage 1: the best value on the car

Stage 1 is software only, flashed through the OBD port. The GTI goes from 210 hp to 290–337 hp depending on the file and fuel, for $500–$560. APR's range runs from low-octane to race fuel; Unitronic publishes 297 hp on 95 and 310 hp on 98, which is the realistic pump-fuel figure. On a manual car, ask for a low-torque file: a stock clutch may slip with full Stage 1 torque.

3. Tune the DSG

On a DSG car the gearbox software is the next buy. A gearbox (TCU) tune makes the clutches clamp harder and shift faster, so the extra torque doesn't turn into slip. APR's DQ250 software is $399.96 at ECS Tuning. At Stage 2 our guide calls it strongly recommended, and at Stage 3 it's the minimum. More in do you need a gearbox tune?

4. Intercooler, especially in a hot climate

The stock intercooler heat-soaks on hot days and on repeated pulls, and the tune pulls power to protect the engine. A bigger one ($540–$1,200, or £899 for Wagner's) keeps power the same on the third pull as on the first. In an Israeli summer this matters more than any peak figure. While you're there, replace the plastic charge pipe, which can crack at higher boost.

5. Downpipe and the Stage 2 file

The factory downpipe is the biggest restriction after the turbo. A downpipe with a catalyst ($850–$880) and a Stage 2 file take the car to 334–351 hp. Buy a catted one: catless pipes break emissions law in most countries and fail inspection. See catless, sports cat or ECE-approved. An intake is optional; it adds sound more than power.

6. When you want more: the IS38

The usual Stage 3 is the Golf R's IS38 turbo, which bolts onto the GTI's engine and keeps your Stage 2 parts. ECS's IS38 kit is $1,075.44 and claims up to 386 hp on 98. If you plan to go past 450 hp later, buy a hybrid turbo now instead, so you don't pay for a turbo twice. From here, budget for a stronger clutch or DSG clutch packs too.

What to skip at first

  • A cat-back exhaust. It's mostly sound and isn't needed for Stage 2 power.
  • Catless downpipes. They fail inspection and can cause problems with your insurer.
  • Parts bought out of order. Each part only pays off with the file written for it.
